Saltwater crocodiles have called the Daintree River home for over 20 million years. No trip to the Daintree is complete without trying to get a glimpse of one up close. Eager to see one for myself, I dragged myself out of bed at 5.00 am and joined a local wildlife cruise along the river. It didn't take long for us to spot our first croc. This one swam stealthily by the side of the boat with just the tip of its snout and eyes above the water. Later, we found another basking in the sun, jaws wide open, baring its teeth and letting out a deep roar. The whole experience gave me chills (and quite the scare), and I left with a newfound appreciation of these ancient, often vilified creatures. It is my hope that we can preserve both the Daintree River and all the animals that call it home for many generations to come.
